In less than 3 weeks, the infamous Fairfax, California Farmers Market will debut for the season. If you’re looking for both excellent food and a place to gather and chill, this is the spot!
Tucked in a redwood grove at Bolinas Park, the Fairfax Farmer’s Market exudes the ultimate representation of a small town community gathering.
This market is more than the typical row of stands where vendors sell their produce and wares to the public and that’s that. This market is different. The vibe here is completely social, pure and intimate. The market is held on Wednesday’s from 4-8 pm and if you arrive around 5:30 you’ll find families and groups of friends sharing blankets, children laughing and playing enjoying the live music and face painting and the adults taking in the scene and doing what Marinite’s do best- source, buy and eat local, fresh, organic and exquisitely good food. So not only do you pick up your strawberries, peaches, wild greens, fresh made bread and farm eggs, all cultivated down the road but you also get to share the love, kinship, free spirit and down to earth feel that epitomizes the town of Fairfax.
In the grove of trees, you’ll find International food vendors that represent local restaurants and kiosks housed in Marin. The Himalayan food stand seems to be the most popular since it caters to vegans, vegetarians, and carnivores alike. Try the typical Himalayan plate with a California or more specifically NorCal twist comes with brown rice, organic greens, lentils and with or without marinated chicken topped with a spicy yogurt sauce. There’s also a delightful Mexican food stand and a top notch creperie that serves filling gluten free buckwheat crepes made to perfection. And if you want some incredible roast chicken to take home don’t miss “Roli Roti” where the chicken and potatoes are similarly crispy skinned, tender and juicy inside and downright delicious.
All the produce, eggs, baked goods and meat stands here are truly excellent. On your way out, stop and check out the small Laguna Farm stand where Graham will give you a deep discount if you come near the end- their produce is a prime example of the high quality and simplicity that spoils us here in Marin. The Fairfax Farmer’s Market runs from May to mid October.
